The Wrestler and DDP

After seeing this pic of DDP at the premiere of The Wrestler, it confirmed my suspicions that Diamond Dallas Page was a major influence for Mickey Rourke’s character Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson.

Not only do they look alike now, but the wrestler character’s appearance also resembled Dallas Page’s wrestling persona.

I also did some poking around online and I found this great video series featuring pro wrestlers including DDP discussing the movie.
Here’s my favorite clip:

But unlike Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson, DDP is not down and out at all.  I got to know him after producing his promotional speaking video.

DDP now acts in movies like The Devil’s Rejects, speaks at corporate events, and does yoga or YRG.  YRG or ‘Yoga for Regular Guys” is a fantastic workout that combines yoga with isometric movement, and will leave you in a sweaty mess on the floor.  I was definitely a skeptic who loved to run and lift but after trying YRG I’m now hooked and I’ve added it to my routine.  Since I started using YRG I’ve been telling anyone who will listen about how fantastic this workout is and in some cases forcing them to try it out.

The Wrestler

Everyone has heard about the amazing performance Mickey Rourke gave in The Wrestler and I’ve seen a bunch of articles about his great comeback.  In my opinion he has been back.  He gave a great performance in Spun and will continue to  deliver as long as he is cast in similar roles that take advantage of his gravitas.  Mickey Rourke brings with him a face of pain that transcends good acting.

Movie makers like Quentin Tarantino and Rob Zombie have been capitalizing on actors like Rourke who bring a “real” rather than “acting” presence to the screen like:
Danny Trejo Elizabeth Daily David Carradine Sid Haig

And if you want to see the exact opposite of this effect watch Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain.  She delivers a truly laughable performance.

Nonetheless The Wrestler was an amazing movie and definitely worth the watch.
